Oakland LCN unites regenerative agriculture and carbon drawdown with other important causes such as social inclusion and youth. Planting Justice has a 0% recidivism rate for re-entry after time served in San Quentin State Prison (State programs are at 44%). Acta non Verba offers youth from this difficult area a safe and green place to play as well as nourishing food and skills. Canticle Farm donates 20% of the produce to the most needy in the community, currently 28 full summer shares to 12 organizations weekly. 

PLACE for Sustainable living is the lead carbon drawdown node having composted 3700 kilos of biochar to date with a possible max climate impact of 937 CO2e

Oakland LCN Educational Partner

The Educational partner for the Oakland LCN is Merritt College’s Natural History and Sustainability program, via the Certificate of Achievement in Urban Agroecology program. Merritt College and the Local Carbon Network project are supporting each other’s work on a regular basis; Team members from the Local Carbon Network have give talk at Merritt College and two Merritt College students are soon to become interns at the Local Carbon Network Project.

The numerous nodes of Oakland’s Local Carbon Network are all activist centers tackling climate change, restorative agriculture, community education, and food justice. We are proud to support their diverse missions by supplying biochar and collaborating on developing the science and technlogy of co-composting to maximize soil health, food yield, and carbon drawdown.

Acta non Verba Youth Urban Farm Project (ANV) elevates life in Oakland and beyond by challenging oppressive dynamics and environments through urban farming. Founded and led mainly by women of color from the surrounding neighborhood and larger community, ANV creates a safe and creative outdoor space for children, youth, and families in East Oakland, CA. ANV engages and strengthens young people’s understanding of nutrition, food production, and healthy living as well as strengthens their ties to the community.
